In my 33 years in the business, I have heard the above statement too many times. I have also consoled many brides when they were disappointed with their forgettable photographs because they went with the lowest bidder or chose the bored housewife who is just trying to make a couple of bucks in her spare time.
I’m not saying that wedding photography is a skill like a great surgeon—but when you are shopping for a surgeon you are looking for some one with a great track record and 1000’s of operations- not just a guy with a sharp knife! Therefore, when shopping for a wedding photographer, you should look for someone with more than just a fancy camera or some spare time.
Not to downplay the thousands of dollars that I spend on professional equipment to keep current with the technology, but I also keep current on the always evolving lighting techniques and extreme attention to detail in posing and composition. One of the most important reasons to commission a professional photographer is their organizational and time management skills. A true professional photographer will make sure that you receive all of the photographs that you request and will do so in an expedited way so that your time is not wasted. (The most valuable commodity at any wedding and reception is time. We understand that concept and, with our experience, the pictures will be quick, painless and definitely FUN). We never rush, but strive to keep the day on schedule. We talk to our couples weeks before the big day to make sure we know what is expected. It is easier to ask all of the questions beforehand in a relaxed atmosphere. I have heard horror stories about photographers taking two hours to do the pictures at the alter due to lack of preparation. I can do the same portraits in 20 minutes.
Keep in mind that most studios overbook their schedule, so the photographer that shows up for your wedding might not be the same person that you originally talked to. At BH Photographic, you can be sure that I am the photographer that shows up on your special day.
My photography has evolved over the last 30 years. I love the change towards the photojournalistic perspective; however, I will always go back to the traditional photographic roots of classic photography for timeless beauty.
When choosing a photographer look for quality, price, experience, personality (you will be spending the day with the photographer) and very importantly, chose a photographer that will be in business when you order the pictures, whether this year or next. (Over 40 photographers have come and gone in 2008-2009 in Genesee county alone.)
I have survived the digital revolution and economic ups and downs. I am here to stay - 33 years and counting.
